RRIS OBAPAO

The Observatory for Biodiversity and Protected Areas in West Africa (OBAPAO) serves as a regional reference hub for data and information on biodiversity and protected areas. It was developed as part of the BIOPAMA II programme, funded by the European Union.

The Regional Reference Information System (RRIS) provides data, maps, and reports useful for decision-making regarding biodiversity management in West African countries. It covers a wide range of environmental themes and enables monitoring of progress in the implementation of biodiversity conservation policies, sharing of assessments on the effectiveness and governance of protected areas, and dissemination of best practices in biodiversity management.

The development of OBAPAO is managed by a sub-regional consortium led by the Centre de Suivi Écologique (CSE), in partnership with RAMPAO, the Regional Marine Centre of the University of Ghana, the AGRHYMET Regional Centre, and international partners such as IUCN, JRC, UNEP-WCMC, CIFOR-ICRAF, among others.

UEMOA is the institutional host on behalf of ECOWAS. All sixteen West African countries are members of the Observatory.
